Watson Fuels saves Post Office

A letter being posted in a post boxWatson Fuels help save community Post Office.

Thanks to a grant from Watson Fuels the Post Office in Portesham has reopened to serve the local community after a four month closure. When it closed in February 2010, the nearest branch was 2 - 3 miles away in Abbotsbury, the route to which is up hill and on a road without a pavement.

As a result, the local community worked together to restore Post Office services to Portesham.

David McKinna the liason officer between Post Office Ltd and the Portesham villagers during the planning of the new post office, said "Negotiations took place as to where in the village could provide suitable premises for a the new post office. "We looked at the pub, the surgery, the garage - but the village hall was chosen when village hall committee members realised it was the only venue that would, and could, accept the post office.
"Dorset Community Action in Dorchester were fundamental in getting us up and running. They gave us a grant, as did Watson Fuels and Chesil Bank Group Parish Council."

Simon Thompson, community fieldworker for Dorset Community Action said: "It has been great working with Portesham Village Hall Committee on this crucial project.
"The group, lead by David McKinna, have been well organised and committed to getting the Post Office service up and running"
David added: "It's so fantastic to be able to bring the post office back to Portesham and everyone I have spoken to in the village is very happy to have it back too.
"It's a much needed service, without it there was a lack of community cohesion.
"The new post office will be a focal point for the community.

Watson Fuels are very pleased to have been able to help in supporting the local community in Portesham in saving this important facility. To view the complete article on the BBC website click here.
